hello everyone and welcome to the concession stand here on the kb radio network i am your host kevin reed and this is the review of the latest robin
hood adaptation the death of robin hood this film stars hugh jackman as robin hood in this dark adaptation of the famed hero and this is coming from the writer director
of pig that starred nicholas cage which was a sneaky good film in case you haven't seen pig and also a quiet place day one which came out of about a year and a half ago but i forgot when it came out but not
too bad yeah you know it didn't go up to the levels of the first two quiet place movies but i thought it was a worthy addition to that franchise but uh he he he being michael Skarnowski.
He tries his hand here with the death of Robin Hood,
which is based on a ballot.
Robin Hood's death from the
17th century,
nonetheless.
But in this film,
it follows an aged
Robin Hood who is tormented by his past killings as an outlaw and living in self-exile.
While he is wounded,
Robin Hood takes refuge at a monastery.
where he befriends the prorist and an orphan girl.
Also starring in this film,
you have Jomie Comer and
Bill Skarsgård,
who's Little John in this movie.
This film I was super looking forward to because of Hugh Jackman.
Hugh Jackman playing an aged,
grizzled,
beat-down-at-the-end-of-his-rope legend in Robin Hood.
Hey,
where has Hugh Jackman done that?
Just look back at Logan and he nailed it in Logan,
which I felt he should have got more awards buzz around that performance as the legendary
Logan or
Wolverine, if you will.
But if he could pull off in a grizzled beat down,
quote unquote hero,
hey,
why not Robin Hood?
And,
you know,
who doesn't like a good Robin Hood story movie?
I mean,
going back to the old Walt Disney cartoon,
Robin Hood,
you know,
but I think the most popular one,
at least in my generation,
would have to be Robin Hood,
Prince of Thieves,
that starred Kevin Costner as the famed hero in that story.
I love that movie.
I really do.
It's been a minute since I've seen it,
and I thought about it while watching this film for various reasons.
but I
need to go back and watch that it's been a minute since i watched robin hood prince of thieves but for those of you who enjoy that movie like it as much as i do and think you're just getting an old version of the kevin costner version
of robin hood this ain't it this is a completely different robin hood this is robin hood as if as you've never seen him before and i mean that in the literal sense.
This
I have never seen Robin Hood displayed on screen like this ever in any adaptation.
This is not a hero.
And they make that perfectly clear that Robin Hood,
yeah,
Rob from the rich give to the poor version of Robin Hood.
No,
That's not this Robin Hood.
This isn't your dad's Robin Hood.
He is a villain.
And
uh at least he was you know and he's reaching his end and we get to the point where all of the people he murdered in his past family members are now coming after him that was the setup you know i'm not doing there's no spoilers here but that was the setup and
he's basically laying them to waste too you know you f8 uh fo if you will don't leave the man alone
you know leave him alone i know you want your vengeance but leave him alone and uh this was an interesting take i wasn't expecting this i really didn't know what to expect from this movie going into it you know as far as the pacing and the tone of it all and
this is a very very dark dark movie i mean from the opening opening shot and scene
It is very,
very dark and moody and depressing,
but man.
Once the movie starts,
we hit the gas.
And the first
45 minutes to an hour of this movie was incredible.
Some of the most brutal,
brutal death scenes you're ever going to see on screen.
I mean,
I like to say,
well,
I don't like to say it,
but
I would say that
I am desensitized to a lot of violence on screen.
I don't.
it doesn't bother me i don't wince at it i don't look away at it because i've watched movies my entire life i've seen every type of rated r movie you can see people heads getting blown off people blowing into pieces and stuff like that horror movies where people are being ripped in half and all this that doesn't bother me but
for some strange reason maybe i'm getting old and grizzled i don't know but for some strange reason these were some of the most uncomfortable death scenes
i've seen and it's done on purpose it's done for a reason bro there was some brutal death scenes in the opening first half of this movie very brutal a lot of action in that uh opening half of this movie i
was completely engaged uh the acting here i mean come on man hugh jackman hugh jackman is awesome hugh jackman in this role he's virtually
recycling his logan character that you know to a degree you know there's differences i'm not saying he he only had one gear but you can see logan in some of his performance there but but he did add some extra elements to this role because it's a different character and i did appreciate that he did not meld his in nor
about none of the actors in this film melded in
i have zero complaints about the acting in this movie uh uh joni calmer i mean we all know how great she is if you ever watch killing eve and uh uh free guy and movies like that uh a duel the last duel uh great
actress i i wonder why she's not in more movies why why doesn't she i don't know maybe it's a choice i i don't know if it's her choice or hollywood but if It's Hollywood's choice.
They are dropping the.
ball they are really fumbling this is a very talented young lady and bill scars guard as little john i was super impressed and he doesn't have a gigantic role in this movie he does have an important role in the movie but
not a super gigantic role but i really really liked him almost to the point where i'm ready to say like man this is probably the best performance i've seen from bill scars guard because it was different you know
it wasn't his it wasn't it the clown you know it wasn't pennywise it wasn't you know anything off the wall it was just a real solid performance by him and i i really liked it the cinematography also gets
a thumbs up to me it was amazing uh beautiful film to look at i mean the landscapes the oh my god it just it looks
17th century it you feel like you're in this world this feels so lived in it feels like a
17th century film like somebody went back in time with a camera and filmed this you know it it feels so authentic and for that it gets a big thumbs up from me now this is where it falls apart now i figured
that this was going to be kind of a slow burn of a film that is is what
two hours long so i figured it was going to be a little slow burn especially when it hit the gas when we first start off you know it was it was it was going i'm telling you that that first hour of this film flew by it
flew by but once you hit like the middle point of this movie it slams on the brakes i wouldn't call it a slow burn because a slow burn by its definition
means is going somewhere it pays off at the end this doesn't really pay off it it doesn't pay off at all it doesn't pay off at the end the second half of this movie will put you to sleep i
don't know if this was the death of uh robin hood or the or the death of your attention span i don't know i don't know what happened but the second half of this movie was boring
and it missed the mark so bad having thought off so great this movie had the potential
to be one of the best of the year it really did it was it was that good it started off that good it not just because of the action and the brutality and you know that all that that was going on which was great but it
was story they were telling the story throughout all of that every blow every every stab every brutal kill there was something behind it it wasn't just
brutal for brutal sake there was something behind it that kept you interested that's why you couldn't look away even though at moments i did like man this is unsettling but i was but there was something going on that
i had to keep my eyes on because the story was so strong and i don't know what happened i don't know what happened in the second half of this movie it is like okay we got you hooked we got you sitting down
you didn't went through your popcorn and so just lay back and chill because we're gonna lay back and chill the ending was unsatisfying the the the story with with with the orphan girl and all that that that was it just felt shoehorned in all all that it
just fell apart in my eyes and it was like two different movies two different movies but the one thing i will say that the performances
did stay above water you know of this sinking ship once we got to the second half hugh jackman was great throughout joni connor was calmer was great throughout you know all the actors did their job you
know they nothing is to be laid at their feet as far as blame is concerned they did their job and even the direction here i think the direction was great you know but it just felt
writing wise the pacing i never seen a display of off the wall pacing like this before how we go from not zero to a hundred but a hundred to zero that's this is my first time i ever experienced that at least recently i'll say but
with all that being said do i think it's a horrible movie no do i think it's a movie you need to run out and see in a theater no
If you can wait till it pop up on streaming,
by all means.
But once it gets on streaming,
please watch it.
Because it is interesting.
It's an interesting story.
I love to see movies or any form of media that will kind of deconstruct what we used to uphold as being one way.
But actually...
we go in a different direction in in the case of the death of robin hood we all grew up knowing that robin hood stole from the rich in order to give to the poor great hero story a lot of uh pop culture heroes
have modeled behind that you know that's their mission statement you know kind of kind of took that blueprint and ran with it whereas in this film it's a complete twist on
You know
he's robbing hood by name only because he is not that type of guy yeah he robbed the rich but he robbed the poor too and killed killed them all he didn't discriminate so i like that deconstruction uh approach to it all i
think that's very interesting but uh the movie kind of missed the mark on giving us a complete satisfactory film
the death of robin hood gets a letter grade of a c yeah i'll i'll give it an average it's an average movie uh nothing to write home and tell mom about that but i don't even know how to define it or how to rank it in robin hood movies like
how because they have about what 50 robin hood movies i i don't know or or robin
Robin Hood adaptations or whatever,
I don't even know where to begin to rank it.
You know,
it's not the worst.
It's certainly not the best.
And it's hovering around the middle.
You know,
it's different.
And for that case,
I say,
hey,
good on them.
It definitely sets itself apart from any other Robin Hood adaptation that I have seen.
But I would like to know your opinion.
